OUR CORE VALUE HONESTY

To be truly successful in business and in life, I believe that we must always be honest and open with our customers, our agents, our distributors and our employees. I believe that openness and honesty make for the best relationships because it leads to trust and faith. Strong and positive relationships that are open and honest are a big part of what differentiates Frédérique Constant companies from most other companies in the Swiss watch industry. Strong relationships allow us to accomplish much more than we would be able to otherwise. Without honesty and integrity, our company could not truly succeed. A key ingredient in strong relationships is to develop emotional connections. It’s important to always act with integrity in your relationships, to be compassionate, friendly, loyal; to make sure that you do the right thing and treat your relationships well. The hardest thing to do is to build trust, but if the trust exists, you can accomplish so much more.

honestyIn any relationship, it’s important to be a good listener as well as a good communicator. Open and honest communication is the best foundation for any relationship. But remember, at the end of the day, it’s not what you say or what you do, it’s how you make people feel that matters the most. In order for someone to feel good about a relationship, he/she must know that the other person truly cares about them, both personally and professionally. At Frédérique Constant, we embrace diversity in thoughts, opinions, and backgrounds. We must always listen with sincerity and give new ideas equal ground on which to stand and be tested. The more widespread and diverse your relationships are, the bigger the positive impact you can make on our company, and the more valuable you will be to our company. We want everyone to always try to go the extra mile in encouraging thorough, complete, and effective communication.

We resolve to communicate openly, to respect others, to be fair with everyone, to shun politics and to maintain a down-to-earth approach in our efforts to interact with each other. Furthermore, it is very important for us that all ‘walk the talk’, do what you say you are going to do. As the company grows, communication becomes more and more important. Everyone needs to understand how his/her team connects to the big picture of what we’re trying to accomplish. No matter how good the communication is, it’s one of the weakest spots in any organization.

If you’ve followed Frédérique Constant for some time, then one thing is clear: our company is growing. We grow because we take on new challenges, and we face even more new challenges because we’re growing. It’s an endless cycle, and it’s a good thing: it’s the only way for a company to survive. But it can also feel risky, stressful, and confusing at times. Sometimes, it may seem that new problems crop up as fast as we solve the old ones (sometimes faster!), but that just means that we’re moving — that we’re getting better and stronger. We must all learn not only to not fear change, but to also embrace it enthusiastically, and perhaps even more importantly, to encourage and drive it. We must always plan for and be prepared for constant change. We must never lose our sense of urgency in making improvements. Higher efficiency means using our passion and creativity to work smarter instead of only harder. Many companies find it difficult to merge creativity and efficiency—they can coexist, and they do so beautifully in our workshops. We are continually thinking of creative ways to become more efficient without sacrificing the quality that has become synonymous with the name Frédérique Constant.

This post is a summary of Off-Sites at Frederique Constant during the past years. Its purpose is to show what such Off-Sites can do for the development of results at other Small and Medium sized companies.

Build the Team
It all starts with a good Team, nowadays the CEO cannot do it all by him or herself anymore. A Team Survey shows how members think and act. It increases understanding, communication and trust. Five levels of team building (Patrick Lencioni) learn what is required for a robust debate and extraordinary results. Emotional Intelligence enables better cooperation.

Lay the Foundation
Based on Jim Collins’ Building a Company Vision, this Off-Site will clarify what the company is all about. Mission to Mars, Value Ranking and Visual Values exercises will let a Team describe the companies Core Values, its Purpose and the long-term goal.

Determine Strategy
What makes the companies Product, Pricing, Promotion and/or Distribution strategy unique? How to create a long-term sustainable strategy, what to DO? Deliverable of this Off-Site is a one page Strategic Plan for the company, Business Unit and/or Department (Verne Harnish & Patrick Thean).

Execute
Often excellent execution is the most difficult to realize. This framework aligns everybody’s work and drives results: MBOs, Actions, Leading KPIs, and Monthly Reviews (Bossidy & Charan). MBOs are the four large year goals, each 25%, that determine the year-end bonus. These are the goals you want to reach at the end of the year. Actions describe what is the person going to DO to realize the MBOs? Must be concrete actions. Who is going to do it and when? Leading KPIs determine what is necessary to reach the MBOs. Should be on the Actions, should be measurements to see if actions are being DONE. Then, schedule Monthly Reviews where the Leader will prepare input and issues overview. Give instruction NOT to come with stack of PPT slides, only One-Pagers are allowed. 25% of time should be spent on reporting, 75% on solutions for issues.

We understand the importance of producing reliable, durable and functional watches that are as technologically advanced as they are well built. Behind the engineering skills and quality materials is a dedication to the core value of creativity, which we hold especially dear at Frédérique Constant. Without it, we would merely be repeating what we have done before.

One of the greatest achievements to which any watchmaking company can aspire is to create and produce its own calibers. In the past ten years, Frédérique Constant has managed this achievement with not one, but fifteen calibers in its Manufacture Collections. Improvements have also been made through the creative use of new materials.

In order to stay ahead of the competition, we need to continuously innovate as well as make incremental improvements to our operations: always striving to create beautiful products, and figuring out how to do anything better. We want everyone to not be afraid to take risks and to not be afraid to make mistakes, because if people aren’t making mistakes then that means they’re not taking enough risks. We understand mistakes as learning opportunities.

We never want to become complacent and accept the status quo just because that’s the way things have always been done. We should always be passionately seeking new possibilities. We set and exceed our own high standards, constantly raising the bar for competitors and for ourselves.

Rather than rest on our laurels and concentrating solely on sales and profits, the men and women who are the driving forces at Frédérique Constant have always believed that successful companies have a responsibility to give something back to people at home and abroad, and to the planet on which we live.

We understand that we have been fortunate, and we see it as our duty to do our utmost to help those less fortunate than ourselves. As such, Frédérique Constant has been a passionate advocate of and contributor to a wide variety of charities, and in particular those that deal with children, education and heart disease.

In China, the company joined forces with one of that country’s greatest movie stars, Miss ShuQi, to visit young patients in the cardiology department of Beijing Children’s Hospital. Frédérique Constant also sponsored the redecoration of the hospital’s wards in conjunction with the Paint a Smile Foundation.

Achievements in innovation

One of the greatest achievements to which any watch maker can aspire is the creation and production of their own calibres. In the past 11 years, Frédérique Constant have managed this achievement with not one, but eleven calibres in our Manufacture Range of watches. Our company is one of the very few Swiss watch manufacturers that can actually claim to produce and use their own calibres in-house, a fact even more amazing considering Frédérique Constant is a family-owned business, not part of some giant, faceless corporation.

Passion is what makes the heart beat faster, so what better way to demonstrate our passion than through our most successful watch. In 1994, we developed our first Heart Beat watch.

We wanted our customers to be able to see the inner workings—the heart and soul—of our mechanical watches, so our designers placed an aperture directly over the balance wheel. This allows the proud owner of a Heart Beat watch to see the intricate movements that go on beneath the surface.

Our goal has not just been to achieve. It is to continue to achieve, to succeed…to win for generations to come. Only by continued investment in our workforce and new technology can we be assured of future success.
